Rest means different things to different people. It’s essential….rest. As humans we must find time for resting and recharging otherwise we’ll pay a high price…in our health. Both mental and physical.

I’m learning what rest is for me. I’ve been working hard at my two jobs and I thought a three day trip to nearby Taos, NM could be just the thing. I love road trips and spending time with family and New Mexico is so beautiful! I thought it was the perfect recipe for some much needed rest. We stayed at a fun hotel, we had some fantastic food and we saw some beautiful places. We played cards, we laughed and we made plans for future vacations. We had so much FUN!

But rest? Sadly, no. I’m super worn out! I’ve always wondered about the debate about introvert v. extrovert. My understanding is that extroverts recharge with others and introverts recharge alone. I’m coming to recognize that I recharge alone with reading, lying in bed or being creative. (Maybe I am an introvert after all?) While this trip was super fun and I loved it, restful it was not. I love these words by Maya Angelou:

Every person needs to take one day away. A day in which one consciously separates the past from the future. Jobs, family, employers, and friends acan exist one day without any one of us and if our egos permit us to confess, they could exist eternally in our absence. Each person deserves a day away in which no problems are confronted, no solutions searched for. Each of us needs to withdraw from the cares which will not withdraw from us.

Maya Angelou

I’ve had three days of adventures, detours and laughter. It was much needed and I am so grateful for the opportunity. Now I’ll work on creating a day where I can rest without addressing problems and searching for solutions. It’s time to go home and find some much needed…
